For many horticulturists, potato growers, and growers of other horticultural crops, the requirements for pesticides are often not clearly defined. As a result, they often use an eclectic range of controls that can be costly and confusing to manage. Such was the case with wetland cover crops in potash agriculture where non-chemical methods were used extensively until unintended consequences forced them to turn back to chemicals. The necessity for clear communication between pesticide suppliers and customers has led there to be numerous publications which summarize the hazards associated with various pesticides as well as outlining precautions which can reduce or eliminate damage potentials. One of the most comprehensive of these publications is the Pesticide Synthesis Handbook (first edition) which has recently been updated. For the past year we have been reviewing all aspects of this publication and compiling it for you for your edification and use here on Potash Stewardship. We will be adding sections to the website on a regular basis covering such topics as: The SDS/Labeling Process How to Read & Write Properly The Hazardous Substances List Pest Management Basics Basis of Chemistry Pesticide Storage & Handling Soil Quality Parameters This post is a collection of publications which have been written by EPA researchers, scientists, veterinarians, and others in an attempt to better understand pesticide hazards and their effects. How To Read And Write Properly - Provides a list of pesticides with a brief overview of the hazards and controls associated with each.
